Frequently Asked Questions
Who can get a meal?
Any member of the community can order Meals on Wheels!
And anyone can refer a client to Meals on Wheels including family members, friends, a Hospital, GP, Rehab Facility, Community Nurse, Dietitian, Law Enforcement Agency, etc. You can even refer yourself. There are no waiting lists, and absolutely no contracts. It is suggested that if you are over 65 (or over 50 Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander) you contact My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 as you may be eligible to receive a small subsidy.
What does a meal pack consist of?
A delicious large meal, dessert, soup and your choice of a small complimentary juice (apple or orange) OR a sandwich and a piece of fruit. You can also request a breakfast and/or snack pack.
What time and day will you deliver my meal?
We deliver Monday to Wednesday and on Friday between 9:30am and 12.00pm. Your first few deliveries will give you a good idea as to what time you can expect your future deliveries.
How often do I have to get meals delivered?
You can have meals delivered once a week or every delivery day. We have clients who receive five meals per week and 2 frozen meals for the weekends. You could have meals delivered Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Some of our clients get one delivery of frozen meals a week. It all depends on your circumstances and what you need.
What if I need my meal cut or blended?
We can cut your meal, provide blended, mashed or pureed meals for those who require a texture modified diet, we do gluten free meals and cater to clients with allergies. These ‘SPECIAL’ meals are prepared as needed. We cater for anyone who has special dietary requirements such as diabetics whether it’s for a short period or permanently. We also cater for your personal preferences, for example, if you don’t like peas, we add you to a special list which will allow us to know to substitute peas for another vegetable that you prefer.
How and when do I pay?
You pay on the first day of the weekly delivery for the meals you ordered. You can pay by cash or cheque. You can also pay on account, or by direct deposit. Again, the choice is yours as to how you pay for your meals.
What happens if I have an appointment and am going out for the day?
If you aren’t going to be home for your delivery please contact the office by 8:00 am on the day of your appointment to cancel your delivery or to arrange to pick your meal up from the kitchen. You can also arrange for a neighbour or friend to take delivery of your meal if you let the office know. Our volunteer drivers are able to leave the meals at your home in a refrigerator or freezer if arranged prior. Please contact the office to arrange access for the volunteer to be able to leave the meal for you at your home at a safe temperature.
Unfortunately, due to food safety regulations, we are not permitted to leave your meal in an esky or cooler unattended at your premises.
What about public holidays? What happens then?
We do not deliver on public holidays, but instead offer our clients extra meals on their delivery day prior to the holiday to ensure they have sufficient meals for the week. We contact our clients to organise this via letters and/or by telephone.
Do you give my personal information to anybody?
No, we have a strict privacy policy and take great care of your personal details. No information is available to outside organisations without your written permission. You can read our Privacy Policy by clicking here.
